A woman who has lost shelter and lives next to her husband’s grave with her two children

A secluded place that looks like a forest under the bamboo trees. Spreading bamboo kanchi over a freshly buried grave. There is a woman sitting on the ground getting a bed. And two children are playing next to him. No one else is there in the secluded setting.

This scene was seen in Uttar Laskarchala village of Kaliakair upazila of Gazipur at around 10:30 am on Wednesday. The woman’s name is Sonia Begum (32). He has two children with him – a 9-year-old daughter and a one-and-a-half-year-old son. Unable to stay at her in-laws’ home, she took shelter with her two children near her husband’s grave.

Sonia Begum said her husband Sujan Mahmood died prematurely recently. He complained that Sujan’s in-laws did not give him proper treatment despite being wealthy. He died instantly. Before overcoming the grief of her husband’s death, she has to fight for survival. He claims that his father-in-law Kofil Uddin and mother-in-law are not willing to give him shelter at home. Even during her husband’s burial, her father-in-law left the scene. The issue was widely criticized at the local level.

Sonia Begum cried and said, “The father-in-law left the body of the husband.” Now where do I stand with these two stupid children? I have no one else. Even the right to stay in the husband’s house is not given. So I am forced to sit here. If Allah arranges something.

Talking to local people, it is known that local resident Saiful Islam and his family gave Sonia temporary shelter after losing her husband. However, fearing legal complications, he had to leave that shelter at the end. With no place to go, Sonia took shelter beside her husband’s grave with her two children, suffering from extreme neglect. Local people said that regardless of family disputes, grandparents should stand by the children thinking about their future.

When Sonia Begum’s father-in-law Kofil Uddin was contacted, he refused to speak.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kaliakair Police Station Shahidul Islam said, we are trying to settle the matter with both parties. If no settlement is reached then legal action will be taken through court.
