A kilometer long electric trap to kill elephants

An eager crowd cheered when an elephant was injured in an electric trap at Nakugaon in Nalitabari, Sherpur on Thursday. According to the forest department, locals are laying traps to protect paddy fields; The forest workers are facing hurdles due to UP chairman-member’s push to remove the traps. 32 elephants were killed in Garo Hills in 2016-25. Under the new law, elephant killing is a cognizable, non-bailable offence; Maximum punishment is 12 years imprisonment. The reluctance of locals to the complex compensation process is a cause of concern for the forest department.
