Measles Outbreak Claims Six More Children as Total Death Toll Passes 800
Six children have died from measles-like symptoms in the last 24 hours, pushing the national death toll to 803 since the current outbreak began on March 15. According to the latest data released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Wednesday, the fatalities occurred between Tuesday and Wednesday morning.
The health agency reports that of the six most recent deaths, four were recorded in the Dhaka division, while the remaining two were reported in the Sylhet division. While no deaths were attributed to laboratory-confirmed cases of measles in the last 24 hours, the cumulative death toll since mid-March includes 95 children whose deaths were directly linked to the confirmed virus, alongside 708 others who succumbed to symptoms associated with the disease.
The surge in suspected cases continues to strain local health infrastructure, with 904 new patients presenting with measles symptoms in the past day. This brings the total number of individuals manifesting symptoms since March 15 to 120,352.
Medical officials confirmed an additional 133 cases of measles within the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of laboratory-confirmed infections to 14,841. Health authorities continue to monitor the situation as the number of patients seeking treatment for the contagious disease remains high.
