Abandoned newborn finds permanent home with rescuers in Chittagong
A newborn girl discovered abandoned and wrapped in plastic in Banshkhali, Chittagong, has been placed in the care of a local family following the completion of formal legal proceedings. The child was officially transferred to the custody of an autorickshaw driver and his wife during a ceremony organized by the social welfare organization Maya Sangha on Friday.
The infant was originally found on the morning of July 15 in the Konakhali area of Shekherkhil Union. The autorickshaw driver’s family discovered the child, immediately sought medical attention for her, and began providing care.
Gias Uddin Akbar Chowdhury, president of Maya Sangha, stated that the family who discovered the infant expressed a deep commitment to raising her from the outset. With the guidance of local administrative officials, including the Office of the Assistant Commissioner (Land) and the Department of Social Services, the organization facilitated the legal requirements necessary to formalize the adoption.
The couple, who already have a five-month-old son, noted that they had grown deeply attached to the girl over the two weeks they provided temporary care. They expressed their resolve to raise the child as their own, noting that their existing experience with their infant son has made the transition manageable.
The local administration confirmed that the transfer was handled in accordance with official procedures, following consultations with the Upazila Nirbahi Officer and relevant social service departments to ensure the child’s safety and long-term welfare.
