ULAB Celebrates Tagore and Nazrul With Cultural Festival Marking Monsoon Season
The University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) celebrated the enduring legacies of Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam while welcoming the monsoon season during a cultural event held Thursday at the university’s permanent campus in Mohammadpur. Organized by the Department of Bangla Language and Literature, the program featured a diverse array of literary, musical, and dance performances that highlighted the profound impact of these two iconic figures on Bengali culture.
ULAB Vice-Chancellor Professor Samsad Mortuza served as the chief guest, offering an insightful reflection on the literary brilliance and humanitarian philosophies of Tagore and Nazrul. She emphasized how the timeless nature of their works continues to provide guidance and inspiration for contemporary society.
The event’s keynote address, titled "My Rabindranath and My Nazrul," was delivered by Ahmed Shamim, Academic Program Coordinator at the Language Research Center of Cornell University. During his presentation, Shamim shared personal anecdotes and intellectual observations, detailing how the literature and ideologies of these two poets have shaped his own worldview and academic journey.
Professor Shamim Reza, advisor to the Department of Bangla Language and Literature, presided over the proceedings. He noted that such gatherings extend far beyond commemorative formalities, serving instead as a vital platform for fostering creativity, cultural engagement, and humanistic values among the student body.
The program reached a high point with a performance by renowned Nazrul Sangeet artist Ferdous Ara. The audience, comprised of students, faculty, staff, and cultural enthusiasts, also enjoyed a vibrant showcase of talent, including poetry recitations, musical renditions, and traditional dance performances centered on the theme of the monsoon season.
