Court Orders Seizure of Hanif, Wifes Tax Documents
A Dhaka court on Monday ordered the seizure of income tax documents belonging to Mahbubul Alam Hanif, a joint general secretary of Bangladesh's ruling Awami League and former Member of Parliament for Kushtia-3, and his wife, Fouzia Alam. The order comes as part of ongoing investigations into allegations of illegal wealth accumulation and money laundering.
Metropolitan Senior Special Sessions Judge Md. Sabbir Faiz issued the directive in response to two separate applications filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Deputy Director Mohammad Tajul Islam Bhuiyan submitted the applications on behalf of the ACC, with prosecutor Mohammad Tariqul arguing the case in court. Following the hearing, the court granted both requests, a decision confirmed by Md. Riaz Hossain, bench assistant for the court.
The ACC's applications stated that the seizure of the income tax records for Hanif and his wife, Fouzia, was deemed necessary for the proper conduct of the ongoing investigations.
The anti-graft body filed two separate cases against Hanif and his wife in July of last year, accusing them of acquiring wealth beyond their known sources of income and involvement in money laundering activities.
