Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Warns of Public Unrest Over Stalled July Charter Implementation
Miya Golam Parwar, Secretary General of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, has warned that the government is deviating from public expectations by prioritizing constitutional amendments over the implementation of the "July Charter." Speaking at a seminar in Khulna titled "The Spirit of the July Uprising: Recent Realities," Parwar argued that the current administration is making a strategic error by failing to formalize the mandate secured through the recent popular referendum.
Organized by the 11-party alliance of Khulna at the Khulna Press Club, the event served as a platform for Parwar to reiterate his party's vision for a democratic, humane, and non-discriminatory state. He emphasized that the July Charter was formulated to dismantle the structures of the previous fascist regime and asserted that the public has already expressed its support for all 84 points outlined in the charter. Consequently, he argued that no political entity should be permitted to cherry-pick specific clauses to suit their narrow interests.
Parwar explicitly criticized the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), suggesting that the party is attempting to sidestep key provisions of the charter because full implementation would curtail the potential for authoritarianism, systemic corruption, and political patronage. He accused the BNP of disregarding the legal weight of presidential decrees, the referendum, and the charter itself as they position themselves for governance.
Warning of potential instability, the Jamaat leader cautioned that if these grievances remain unaddressed within the legislative framework, the public may be forced to take to the streets to claim their mandate. He noted that such a shift from parliamentary discourse to civil unrest carries a significant risk of conflict, suggesting that the government's current path is inviting unnecessary social friction.
The seminar, chaired by Khulna metropolitan Jamaat leader Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman, featured contributions from several local party officials and was highlighted by a keynote presentation from Professor Mahfuzur Rahman Akhond of Rajshahi University. Through this gathering, Jamaat-e-Islami signaled its intent to maintain public pressure on the government to ensure that the foundational promises of the July uprising are honored in full.
