Rear Admiral Khandaker Misbah Ul Azim Appointed as New Bangladesh Navy Chief
Rear Admiral Mohammad Nazmul Hassan will step down as Chief of Naval Staff on July 23, marking the end of a tenure that began in July 2023. He will be succeeded by Rear Admiral Khandaker Misbah-ul-Azim, who is set to receive a promotion to the rank of Vice Admiral upon assuming command. The change in leadership was formally announced by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) directorate on Thursday.
Rear Admiral Misbah-ul-Azim brings a distinguished academic and professional background to the position. Joining the Bangladesh Navy on January 1, 1987, he graduated at the top of his class in both seniority and merit within his commissioning batch. Currently serving as the Bangladesh Ambassador to Oman, he holds an extensive array of advanced degrees, including a PhD in Maritime Governance from the Bangladesh University of Professionals and a Master of Philosophy. His academic record includes first-class honors in strategic studies from both the University of Madras in India and the National Defense University in China, as well as a Master’s in Defense Studies from the National University of Bangladesh. His lifelong academic excellence was recognized with the Chancellor’s Award.
Throughout his career, the incoming naval chief has held various pivotal command and staff appointments. His operational experience extends to international peacekeeping efforts, having served with United Nations missions in Lebanon and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
