Fakhrul calls for dialogue to resolve July Charter controversy
Local Government Minister Asif Mahmud and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir have called for an immediate end to the ongoing controversy surrounding the “July Charter,” urging stakeholders to resolve disagreements through constructive dialogue. Addressing a ceremony honoring journalists held by the National Editors Council in Dhaka on Sunday, the leaders cautioned against the spread of misinformation regarding the document.
Mirza Fakhrul emphasized that the July uprising has created a unique opportunity for national reform, asserting that the current administration is committed to fulfilling the promises made to the public. He expressed confidence in the collective ability of the nation to establish a state founded on justice and equity, though he acknowledged the difficulty of undoing the systemic damage accumulated over the previous 16 years within a short timeframe.
Reflecting on the history of political turmoil in the country, the BNP Secretary General argued that it is time to move past cycles of violence. He called for a shift in political culture, urging opposition parties to abandon a reflexively obstructive mentality. Instead, he invited them to participate in the constitutional reform process, suggesting that parliamentary deliberation is the only viable path to securing a stable future for the next generation.
The discussion also touched upon the state of the media, with Mirza Fakhrul noting that many institutions remain burdened by a culture of sycophancy. He stated that moving toward a truly independent and professional media landscape will require a significant societal shift, describing it as a necessary component of the broader revolutionary change initiated by the July movement.
