Bangladesh Supreme Court Upholds Ruling Striking Down 15th Constitutional Amendment
Bangladesh’s Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed an appeal challenging a High Court ruling that invalidated the 15th amendment to the constitution, a landmark legal development that effectively restores provisions for a non-party caretaker government and the referendum system.
The four-member Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice Jubaer Rahman Chowdhury, issued the order, cementing the earlier High Court decision. The legal challenge centered on the 15th amendment, which had previously abolished the caretaker government system—a mechanism historically utilized in the country to oversee national elections—and removed the provision for holding referendums.
