Rare Dhai Fish Catch Fetches Premium Price at Goalando Market
Two rare Dhai fish, weighing approximately 11 kilograms and 3 kilograms, were hauled from the Padma River near Goalanda in Rajbari on Tuesday, fetching a total of 69,000 taka. Local fishers caught the specimens near the Bahir Char Daulatdia area during their morning operations.
The larger fish, weighing 10.8 kilograms, was caught by a local fisherman near the Kalabagan area at approximately 10 a.m. Simultaneously, a smaller 3-kilogram fish was netted by Paran Haldar, a fisherman from the Ballamalochi area of Manikganj’s Harirampur upazila.
The catch was brought to the Daulatdia Ferry Ghat market for auction. Shahjahan Sheikh, a local fish trader, secured the larger fish for 5,300 taka per kilogram, totaling 57,240 taka. He subsequently purchased the smaller fish for 3,500 taka per kilogram, bringing the total acquisition cost to 10,500 taka.
Following the purchase, Sheikh leveraged social media and his professional network to find buyers. He eventually reached an agreement with Jahangir Chowdhury, a Saudi Arabia-based expatriate from Chittagong, who expressed interest in the haul. Sheikh sold the larger fish for 58,320 taka and the smaller one for 10,950 taka, netting a modest profit margin. The fish were dispatched to the buyer in Chittagong by Tuesday afternoon.
