Woman dies after stabbing in Dhaka; ex-husband in custody
A 35-year-old woman identified as Jhumur Akter died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital late Tuesday night after being attacked with a sharp weapon in the capital’s Middle Badda area. Local authorities have taken her former husband, Rezaul Karim, into custody following the incident.
According to Badda police, the attack occurred around 7:00 p.m. in front of a residence at the DIT Project in Middle Badda. Sub-Inspector Md. Nasir Uddin reported that Jhumur was accompanied by two distant relatives when she noticed she was being followed by Karim. Fearing for her safety, she attempted to retreat into her home, but Karim allegedly intercepted her at the gate and inflicted multiple wounds with a sharp weapon.
The victim’s cries for help drew the attention of neighbors, who managed to apprehend Karim at the scene and hand him over to police officers. Jhumur was rushed to the hospital in critical condition but succumbed to her injuries at approximately 10:30 p.m.
Preliminary investigations suggest the motive for the attack was rooted in personal animosity. Police stated that Jhumur had previously divorced Karim and had since remarried, leading investigators to believe the assault was an act of retaliation. Authorities are continuing to probe the incident to determine if any other factors contributed to the violence.
Jhumur, a native of Dakshin Bighai village in Patuakhali, was the daughter of Jafar Howlader.
