Measles outbreak claims three more lives as total deaths reach 741
Three more children have died from symptoms associated with measles in the past 24 hours, according to the latest report from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) released on Monday.
The fatalities, which occurred between Sunday and Monday morning, bring the total death toll since March 15 to 741. This cumulative figure includes 93 confirmed cases of measles and 648 deaths attributed to symptoms linked to the disease. The recent deaths were geographically distributed, with one fatality reported in the Dhaka division and one each in the Rajshahi and Sylhet divisions.
Health officials reported 947 new cases exhibiting measles-like symptoms over the last day, pushing the total number of symptomatic cases since mid-March to 106,565. Meanwhile, laboratory testing confirmed 159 new positive cases of measles within the same 24-hour period. Since the start of the current surge on March 15, the national total of confirmed measles cases has reached 12,791.
Medical facilities continue to manage a significant influx of patients, with 89,734 children having been hospitalized for measles-related symptoms over the past several months. According to the DGHS data, the healthcare system has seen successful outcomes for the majority of these patients, as 86,062 individuals have recovered and been discharged from hospitals.
