Schoolgirl murdered in Satkhira; mob kills suspect following discovery of body
A nine-year-old schoolgirl was found dead inside a wardrobe in a residence adjacent to her school in Satkhira’s Kaliganj upazila on Monday night, triggering a violent public backlash that resulted in the lynching of the homeowner.
The victim, Farzana Sultana, a third-grade student at Kazla Kashibati Government Primary School, had been reported missing since Monday morning. According to her family, the child left for school at 8:30 a.m. but failed to return home. Following a frantic search by the family and local residents, police were notified, prompting an investigation into her disappearance.
At approximately 8:00 p.m., authorities discovered Farzana’s body concealed within a drawer in a wardrobe inside the residence of 26-year-old Sumaiya, the wife of a local street vendor. Upon the discovery, a mob gathered at the scene, overwhelmed the homeowner, and subjected her to a fatal beating. Police arrived shortly after to disperse the crowd and regain control of the situation.
Preliminary allegations from local residents suggest that the child was murdered for a pair of gold earrings she was wearing. Authorities have confirmed that they are investigating these claims to determine the precise motive behind the crime.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kaliganj Police Station, Shahidul Islam, confirmed that both bodies were recovered from the scene on Monday night. The remains have been held at the police station for inquests and are scheduled to be transferred to Satkhira Sadar Hospital morgue on Tuesday morning for post-mortem examinations. Investigations into the murder of the child and the subsequent mob killing of the suspect remain ongoing.
