1,300-Pound Landlord Cow Commands $11,000 Price Tag Ahead of Eid al-Adha

A colossal bull, named “Jomidar” — meaning landlord or aristocrat — for its discerning palate, has become a local spectacle in Jamalpur’s Melandah Upazila as its owners prepare it for sale during the upcoming Eid al-Adha. Weighing approximately 1,280 kilograms (32 maunds) and standing an impressive 1.8 meters (6 feet) tall with a length of 3.3 meters (11 feet), the striking animal is expected to fetch 1.3 million Bangladeshi Taka.
Jomidar’s majestic appearance, characterized by a pristine white coat adorned with well-defined black spots, captivates onlookers who frequently gather at its owner’s home. The bull’s unique name, bestowed by owner Rozina Begum, stems from its refusal to consume stale or low-quality food, a trait that earned it the affectionate moniker implying a taste for the finer things in life.

Rozina Begum and her husband, Rafiqul Islam, have meticulously raised Jomidar for four years in Mahmudpur village. They proudly assert that Jomidar is currently the largest bull in the entire Melandah Upazila, a claim that draws curious crowds to their humble abode.
On a recent Friday visit to Mahmudpur, Jomidar was observed tethered in a cattle shed within the family’s courtyard, contentedly munching on fresh grass offered by Rozina. Following its meal, she meticulously bathed the giant animal with a hose. Despite the bull occasionally charging playfully at the gathered onlookers, Rozina calmly soothed it with gentle pats.

The couple plans to present Jomidar for sale at the Eid al-Adha cattle market, stating their asking price of BDT 1.3 million. Rozina explained that Jomidar, now four years old, was born to one of their domestic cows and has been fattened using traditional methods. She emphasized that Jomidar’s strict dietary preferences necessitate a constant supply of high-quality feed and diligent care, contributing to its remarkable growth to its current 32-maund weight.
Detailing the bull’s aristocratic diet, Rozina revealed that Jomidar’s daily meals include wheat husk, corn powder, kalai husk, fresh green grass, bananas, and even duck eggs. This carefully curated nutrition, she reiterated, is the reason behind its ‘Jomidar’ name. She also claims the bull responds to its name and pays close attention when spoken to.
The bull’s sheer size has astonished visitors. Firoj Mia, who traveled from Melandah town specifically to see Jomidar, remarked, “I don’t think there’s another bull this big in the entire upazila. I heard the name Jomidar from several people, so I came to see it myself.” Local resident Azgor Ali added, “We had only heard stories of such large bulls, but now we’ve seen one with our own eyes.”
Rafiqul Islam disclosed that the daily expenditure for Jomidar’s upkeep, including its premium diet of bananas, duck eggs, local grass, corn, and wheat husk, amounts to approximately BDT 1,000. He treats the bull “like his own child,” even bathing it regularly with shampoo. Last year, the couple received an offer of BDT 620,000 but decided against selling, believing the bull would grow larger and more impressive.
Jamalpur’s Additional District Livestock Officer, A.T.M. Habibur Rahman, noted that even small-scale farmers are now benefiting from raising large cattle. He confirmed that the Livestock Department is regularly monitoring Jomidar and providing the necessary advice and support to its owners.
