BNWLA Urges Investigative Journalism to Curb Migrant Worker Exploitation
The Bangladesh National Women Lawyers Association (BNWLA) hosted a press cafe in Dhaka on Monday, bringing together journalists, migration experts, and key stakeholders to discuss the intersection of migration rights and access to justice. Held at the Bishwa Sahitto Kendro in Banglamotor, the event emphasized the pivotal role of investigative journalism in addressing the systemic challenges faced by migrant workers and ensuring they receive fair legal representation.
During the opening remarks, BNWLA Director Morshed Belal Khan highlighted the need for journalists to focus on the complexities of the migration sector. He underscored that in-depth reporting is essential to shedding light on the vulnerabilities of workers and advocating for stronger accountability mechanisms.
The program featured a technical session led by Prothom Alo senior reporter Md. Mohiuddin and Helvetas Bangladesh project coordinator Sajjid Ahmed. The session focused on strategies for enhancing public awareness, maintaining ethical standards in reporting, and conducting rigorous, evidence-based investigations into the migration industry.
Participants and experts at the forum pointed out that migrant workers from Bangladesh frequently encounter severe hardships both at home and in their countries of destination. Discussion focused on the recurring patterns of fraud, exploitation, and the significant obstacles workers face when attempting to navigate the legal system to seek justice.
The consensus among those in attendance was that objective, high-quality media coverage serves as a critical tool for reform. By consistently exposing malpractice and highlighting the lived realities of migrant laborers, the media can foster greater public awareness while compelling relevant authorities to implement more effective prevention strategies and policy solutions.
