Madonna Shelves Highly Anticipated Biopic Following Budget Disputes with Universal
Pop icon Madonna has officially scrapped her long-anticipated biopic, citing insurmountable creative and financial disagreements with Universal Pictures. The singer, who intended to direct the film herself, confirmed that the project collapsed after the studio failed to align with her vision for the scale and production requirements of her life story.
In an interview with Interview magazine, Madonna explained that the impasse centered on budget constraints. Arguing that her expansive career and personal journey required a substantial financial investment to properly capture on screen, the artist proposed relocating the production to Serbia to mitigate costs. However, studio executives reportedly rejected the suggestion, questioning her ability to sustain a production in the region. Madonna recalled their skepticism regarding her capacity to endure a shoot in Serbia for more than four days, a response she found reductive given her history of overcoming personal and professional challenges.
The project, which was first announced in 2020, was slated to feature a screenplay co-written by the singer and acclaimed screenwriter Diablo Cody. The film was intended to offer an authentic look at the "rollercoaster" of her life, documented from her own perspective. Following an exhaustive casting process dubbed the "Madonna Bootcamp," actress Julia Garner had been selected to portray the superstar. Despite this momentum, reports emerged in 2023 that the film, tentatively titled "Who’s That Girl," had been shelved.
Tensions between the artist and Universal long preceded this recent collapse. In 2017, the studio purchased the rights to "Blond Ambition," an unauthorized script detailing Madonna’s early career. The singer publicly denounced the project on social media, questioning why a studio would attempt to produce a biographical film based on what she characterized as a work of complete fiction.
Following the cancellation of her own biopic, Madonna explored the possibility of adapting her story into a series for Netflix. That initiative ultimately stalled as well, largely due to complications regarding the intellectual property rights of the screenplay she had written for the Universal project. Madonna noted that regaining the rights to her own words would have required a significant financial outlay to the studio. Furthermore, the singer expressed frustration with the procedural nature of television production, noting that she struggled to find the right collaborative partners to guide the series forward.
While Madonna has found success as an actress in films such as "Desperately Seeking Susan," "Dick Tracy," and "Evita," her history as a director remains contested. She previously helmed "Filth and Wisdom" and the historical drama "W.E.," neither of which achieved significant critical or commercial traction. Despite the setbacks, Madonna remains firm in her desire to control the narrative of her life, even as she confronts the rigid commercial structures of Hollywood.
