Jaya Ahsan Halts Egg, Fish Consumption Citing Animal Ethics

Award-winning Bangladeshi actress Jaya Ahsan, a prominent figure in both Kolkata and Dhaka’s entertainment scenes, has opened up about her unconventional dietary choices and a profound mental shift driven by her animal rights advocacy, revealing a surprising struggle to consume even fish and eggs despite her hearty appetite.
Known for her remarkable fitness and youthful appearance, Ahsan often surprises colleagues with her substantial meals, starkly contrasting with industry peers focused on restrictive diets for weight management.
In a recent interview, Ahsan disclosed her attempt to maintain a pescetarian diet for the past three years. However, this commitment has been challenged by a deepening moral conflict, stemming directly from her extensive work in animal welfare.
“Lately, I can’t even eat eggs, nor fish,” Ahsan stated. “I feel as though I am killing animals. This is a mental issue for me.” Her empathy now extends to other animal products.
“This realization intensified when I began working on animal rights,” she explained. “Now, if I eat chicken, I feel like I am consuming the food meant for the stray four-legged children (dogs and cats) on the street.” She added, however, that she believes everyone, especially women, should consume adequate protein.
Despite these evolving ethical considerations, Ahsan embraces eating for enjoyment and soul satisfaction. “I love to eat, and I do eat,” she affirmed. “I believe sometimes it’s necessary to eat to satisfy one’s soul. Many adhere to foreign diets, but I don’t.”
Her daily routine includes specific comfort foods essential for her. “On set, if I don’t get shingara with green chilies and onions, my head gets heated,” she quipped, calling it their “national shooting food.” Her day is also incomplete without a cup of milk tea prepared by her mother each morning.
Ahsan’s preference for vegetables and raw foods dates back to her childhood, with many playfully suggesting she eats everything raw. “I don’t eat *everything* raw, but I can eat many things raw,” she clarified.
