Two cargo ships collide at Chittagong Port outer anchorage; no injuries reported

Two commercial vessels collided at the outer anchorage of Chittagong Port late Saturday, marking the second such maritime incident in the area within a span of days. All 21 crew members on board both ships are reported to be safe, and maritime traffic remains unaffected.

The collision occurred at approximately 12:30 a.m. when the MV Anassa, a vessel carrying cement raw materials, attempted to anchor at the Alpha anchorage. During the maneuver, the vessel struck the MV Jahan Jahab, which was already stationed at the site.

Chittagong Port Authority Secretary Syed Refayet Hamim stated that the collision was caused by strong currents. While the MV Anassa sustained minor damage to its exterior hull, officials confirmed that there was no water ingress in either vessel. Both ships have since been safely separated and re-anchored.

The MV Anassa arrived at the port carrying approximately 35,000 tons of slag, a raw material used in cement production. The MV Jahan Jahab, which arrived at the outer anchorage from Mongla Port on July 26, was preparing to depart for its next destination at the time of the incident.

This collision follows a similar accident on Friday, when the diesel tanker MT Sea Spike collided with the anchored bulk carrier MV Sun Shine. Authorities are currently monitoring the situation as the port maintains its standard operational procedures for outer anchorage navigation.
