Jamaat-e-Islami activist faces license revocation after seizing subsidized fertilizer with fraudulent farmer records in Rajshahi

Authorities in Paba Upazila, Rajshahi, have seized a illicit shipment of fertilizer after a local individual allegedly used the names of four fictitious farmers to procure the supplies. The accused, identified as Md. Lucky, reportedly bypassed agricultural distribution regulations to obtain 15 sacks of fertilizer from an authorized dealer.
The incident occurred Monday at the Bargachhi market. Lucky, who operates a pesticide shop named Badsha Enterprise, is licensed solely for the sale of pesticides and is not authorized to trade in fertilizers. According to local sources, he secured the shipment—comprising four sacks of urea, seven sacks of MOP, five sacks of TSP, and three sacks of DAP—using forged records created on Sunday.
Tensions escalated at the market when local residents confronted Lucky, questioning why a single merchant was permitted to transport a large quantity of fertilizer while actual farmers were struggling to meet their own needs. The confrontation reportedly turned physical, with allegations that Lucky assaulted a local auto-rickshaw driver, Zakir Hossain, who had questioned the legitimacy of the transaction.
Following the disturbance, officials from the Upazila Agriculture Department, accompanied by the local police, arrived at the scene. They ordered the immediate retrieval of the fertilizer from Badsha Enterprise. Upon investigation, authorities discovered an additional four sacks of unauthorized fertilizer at the shop, bringing the total recovered amount to 19 sacks. The goods were subsequently returned to the original BCI-authorized dealer, Messers Janata Hardware.
While the dealer, Khalilur Rahman, claimed he could not verify the identities of the farmers listed on the procurement memos, officials have taken formal disciplinary action. Paba Upazila Agriculture Officer M. A. Mannan confirmed that a show-cause notice has been issued to Lucky and a formal recommendation has been submitted to cancel his pesticide trading license.
Although Lucky denied holding any political affiliation, local sources, including Milan Rahman, the president of the Bargachhi Union branch of Jamaat-e-Islami, confirmed that the accused is an activist within the party’s youth wing. The party official requested that media reports regarding the incident remain suppressed. Investigations into the fraudulent procurement process remain ongoing.
