Police arrest fugitive inmate nine months after escape from Khagrachari District Jail

Police have arrested Mohammad Shafiqul Islam, an inmate who escaped from the Khagrachhari District Jail, ending a fugitive period of over nine months. The 24-year-old was apprehended at approximately 10:00 p.m. on Thursday in the Lalkhan Bazar area of Chittagong city.

The operation was conducted jointly by a tactical team from the Khagrachhari Sadar Police Station and the Kotwali Police Station in Chittagong. Shafiqul, a resident of the Islampur area in Khagrachhari Sadar Upazila, is the son of the late Nurul Islam.

Shafiqul had been serving a six-month prison sentence following a conviction for the theft of a battery-operated autorickshaw. He had completed one month and 17 days of his sentence before managing to climb over the boundary wall of the Khagrachhari District Jail on November 9, 2025. Authorities successfully located him nine months and 11 days after his escape.

Officer-in-Charge of Khagrachhari Sadar Police Station, Mohammad Kai Kislu, confirmed the arrest and noted that the suspect was produced before a court on Friday to face further legal proceedings.
