Driver Alleges Former MP Used Government Contracts to Cover Up Affair

A scandal involving Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam has deepened following allegations from his former driver and relative, Obaidur Rahman, who claims the politician used government contracts and professional favors to facilitate an illicit relationship with a young woman. The 75-year-old MP, representing Satkhira-4, recently faced intense public scrutiny after a private video of him and the woman circulated on social media.
According to reporting by Prothom Alo, Rahman—who is the uncle of the young woman in the video—has filed an attempted murder case against the MP and four others at Dhaka’s Pallabi Police Station. Rahman alleges that the MP exploited the young woman’s family by promising her father, Masum Billah, lucrative government construction contracts and millionaire status in exchange for their silence regarding the affair.

Rahman claims that the relationship had been ongoing since before the 13th parliamentary elections, with the MP frequently staying at the woman’s rental home in Dhaka despite having access to government housing. He further alleged that the woman’s parents were complicit, choosing to prioritize financial gain over the moral implications of the arrangement. Under the MP’s direction, Billah allegedly obtained a first-class contracting license under the name “Masum Enterprise.” Rahman stated that while Billah lacked the technical expertise for the industry, the MP personally orchestrated the submission of bids for projects at local government and education engineering departments in Satkhira, even intervening in personnel transfers to ensure the contracts were secured.
The allegations suggest that the MP maintained control over the situation through a series of promises, including a government job for the woman and significant business opportunities for her father. Rahman claims that when he confronted the MP about the nature of the relationship on June 20, the lawmaker attempted to justify his actions by invoking a religious fatwa, claiming the arrangement was a form of temporary marriage. Rahman further alleges that he was offered a car and a position as an assistant private secretary to silence his opposition to the arrangement.

Following the leak of the video and the subsequent public outcry, Jamaat-e-Islami announced the expulsion of Gazi Nazrul Islam citing moral failure. The former lawmaker has since remained out of the public eye, and his personal mobile phone has been unreachable.
Conversely, the young woman has dismissed the allegations as part of a smear campaign. In a recorded video statement, she asserted that she and the MP were married on June 17, 2026, with the consent of both families and the presence of the lawmaker’s first wife. She characterized the distribution of their private footage as a calculated act following a targeted confrontation at her father’s office in July. The woman’s father, Masum Billah, could not be reached for comment as his phone remains disconnected.
